The Department of Energy’s own Oct. 1, 2025 announcement confirms it terminated 321 financial awards supporting 223 projects, saving “over $7.5 billion” — matching the national scale Tonko cited almost exactly. Independent reporting by Latitude Media, which obtained the full list of canceled awards, found that every terminated award went to a project located in one of the 16 states that voted for Kamala Harris in 2024, corroborating Tonko’s claim that the cuts fell exclusively on Democratic-led states.

That partisan-targeting claim was further validated roughly nine months later, when DOE admitted in a July 2026 court filing that award selection was “based solely on the political identity of the grant recipient’s state … whether the recipient’s location and/or place of performance was in a Blue State or a non-Blue State,” not on programmatic or performance grounds. The specific regional figure Tonko’s office cited — $179,834,935 across 26 awards for the “Capital Region” — could not be independently cross-checked against a primary DOE regional breakdown. A House Appropriations Democrats’ tracking document instead shows NY-20 (Tonko’s full congressional district, a somewhat different geographic frame than “Capital Region”) losing 28 awards worth roughly $239.6 million — a larger but same-order-of-magnitude figure, likely reflecting a different geographic boundary rather than an error.

Overall, the most consequential elements of the claim — the scale of the cancellations, the national total, and the assertion that the cuts targeted only Democratic-voting states — are well-supported by DOE’s own statements and independent reporting. The precise Capital Region dollar figure is plausible and in the right range, but not confirmed to the dollar.
